Nervous System Flashcards
what are the functions of the nervous system?
- to recieve and analyse impulses
- to convey them from the brain
- to integrate them to maintain homeostasis
how does the nervous system work?
sensory receptor
integration in brain and spinal chord
motor output -> effector
what are the two systems that make the nervous system?
- central nervous
2. peripheral nervous system
what are the two parts of the central nervous system?
brain
spinal chord
approximately how much oxygen does the brain need
20%
what do the meninges do?
surround brain + spinal chord
what are the 3 parts of the brain?
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brain stem
what is a neurone?
a cell that transmits nerve impulses
what is a nerve?
collection of neurones
what do neuroglia do?
support+ protect neurones
replicate
don’t conduct
what is the name of the nerve running down the leg?
Sciatic
what is multiple sclerosis?
disease affecting the brain and spinal chord where immune system attacks the cells causing numbness, loss of muscle control, vision, balance
what is the myelin sheathe?
an insulating sheathe that wraps round the axon helping to speed up the transmition of signals
what is the white matter in the brain?
the connection wires
what is the grey matter in the brain
the thinking part
