Nervous System Flashcards
Prominent split on the cord’s anterior side
Anterior median fissure
Shallow groove on the cord’s posterior side
Posterior median sulcus
Meninges
Three-layered membrane that protects posterior cavities
Dura mater
Most superficial layer of meninges
Tough and durable
Arachnoid mater
Deep to dura mater
Web-like wrapping
Pia mater
Deepest covering of meninges
Tightly attached to spinal cord
Delicate, slippery
Subarachnoid space
Deep to arachnoid mater.
Filled with cerebrospinal fluid
Subdural space
Deep to dura mater
Filled with serous fluid
Epidural space
Superficial to dura mater and deep to bone
Filled with fat, blood vessels and connect tissues
White column
Myelinated axons and dendrites of association neurons that travel up to and down spinal cord
Anterior white column
Anterior side of spinal cord tissue
Anterior to gray horns
Lateral white columns
Lateral sides of myelinated matter
Posterior white column
Posterior side of spinal cord
Posterior to gray horns
Gray horns
Mostly un-myelinated dendrites and axons of association neurons as well
Anterior gray horns
Next to anterior median fissure
Houses cell body of motor neurons
Lateral gray horns
Lateral protrusions of gray matter
Posterior gray horns
Posterior side of gray horns
Gray commissure
Narrow strip of gray matter that joins left and right sides of cord
Central canal
Tiny hole in center of gray commissure
Small amount of cerebrospinal fluid flows through it
Ventral root
Collection of axons of motor neurons anchored to anterior side
Dorsal side
Collection of axons of sensory neurons anchored to posterior side of cord
Dorsal root ganglion
Swollen area on dorsal root
Houses cell body of sensory neurons
Mixed spinal nerve
Lateral to dorsal root ganglion
Narrow mix of nerves
Control autonomic NS
Dorsal Ramus
Innervates the skin and deep muscles of the back
Lateral/posterior of mixed spinal nerves
Rami communicantes
Connects to the autonomic system
Branches off anterior side of ventral ramus
Ventral Ramus
Carries sensation and motor impulses throughout body
Plexus
Many ventral Ramus tangled together
