Nervous System 4 Flashcards
Regions of the brain:
Diencephalon
- enclosed by the cerebral hemispheres and above the brain stem
It contains:
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
- epithalamus(pineal gland)
Thalamus
- the 2 egg shaped grey matter
- it’s the gateway to the cerebral cortex which organizes and directs sensory and motor info to the right cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus
- below the thalamus
- made up of nuclei that regulates visceral activities to maintain homeostasis
- links the nervous and endocrine systems through the pituitary gland which is connected by the infundibulum
Which of the following is NOT a function of the hypothalamus?
A. Regulate food intake
В.regulate emotional responses
C. regulate the thalamus
D. regulate body temperature
E. regulate the circadian rhythm
A
The limbic system:
Functions
Amygdala: correlates with anger and fear responses
Cingulate gyrus: expresses emotions through gestures and resolves mental conflict
Hippocampus: memory
True or False
The cerebellum generates conscious motor control
False
Cerebellum
- is inferior to the occipital lobe lobe and dorsal to the brain stem
- accounts for 11% of the brains total mass
- each hemisphere has 3 lobes
- the 2 hemispheres are connected by the vermis(corpus callosum)
Cerebellum:
Functions
Monitors expected Va actual movements
Makes sure the Erebus coordinated and smooth skeletal muscle coordination
Important for posture, balance and agility
- most fibres tracts entering and leaving the body are ipsilateral( going to the same side of the body)
Functions of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata
Midbrain:
- regulates heart rate and respiration
- encloses the cerebral aqueduct and helps to keep eqm
Pons: regulates respiration
Medulla oblongata:
Medulla Oblongata:
regulates vital reflexes: breathing, heart rhythm, and blood pressure
• regulates non-vital reflexes: coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting
The brain stem
Contains all 3 from previous slide and controls automatic behaviour necessary for survival
