Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
what do receptors in eyes detect
A
light
2
Q
what do receptors in ears detects
A
sound
3
Q
what do receptors In ears also detect other than sound
A
changes in position and enable us to keep balanced
4
Q
what do receptors on the tongue and nose detect
A
taste and smell
5
Q
what do receptors on skin detect (4)
A
- touch
- pressure
- pain
- temp. change
6
Q
where does info from receptors pass along
A
neurones in nerves on their way to the brain
7
Q
what does the brain do upon arrival of the information from receptors
A
coordinates a response
8
Q
what are reflex actions
A
automatic and rapid
9
Q
what do reflex actions often involve
A
sensory, relay and motor neurones
10
Q
describe the steps in a reflex action
A
- impulses from a receptor pass along a sensory neurone (SN) to the central nervous system (CNS)
- at a synapse between a SN and a relay neurone (RN) in the CNS a chemical is released that causes an impulse to be sent along a RN
- a chemical is released at the synapse between a RN and motor neurone (MN) in the CNS causing impulses to be sent along a MN to the organ that brings about a response
- the effector is either a muscle or a gland. a muscle responds by contracting and a gland responds by releasing chemicals
11
Q
what do receptor cells detect
A
stimuli
