Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
Complex and fast acting. Detects changes in external environment and respond to it, processing information.
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
Central nervous sytem and peripheral nervous system.
What is the CNS made up of?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS made up of?
All other nerve tissue outside of CNS
What are the 3 types of neurons?
Sensory, motor and connector neuron.
What is the difference between sensory neuron and motor neuron?
Sensory neurons have a cell body part way and motor neurons have a cell body at the top.
What are the 4 main parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, Axons, Cell Body and ends of dendrites.
Where is the myelin located?
The myelin sheath protects the nerve.
What does NOR stand for and what is it?
Nodes of ranvier and are the gaps between the myelin sheath.
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemicals released that transmit the message to the next neuron.
What is a neuron?
A specialised cell
What direction of impulse sends information to the brain?
Ascending tract
What direction of impulse sends information to the spinal cord?
Descending tract
