Brain Flashcards
3 layers of meninges
pia mater, arachnoid, dura mater
What ARE the meninges?
Connective tissue
Protection of the brain (outside first).
Cranium, dura mater, arachnoid, CSF, pia mater and the brain.
What is the CSF?
Cerebrospinal fluid
What are the basic 3 parts of the brain?

Cerebrum, Cerebellum and the brain stem.

What is the cerebrum?
Conscious processes
What is the Cerebellum?
Unconscious processes
What is the brain stem?
Relays messages between brain and spinal cord.
What are the 5 lobes of the brain?
Frontal Lobe (front), Occipitae Lobe (back), Parietal Lobe (top middle), Temporal Lobe (bottom middle) and Insula Lobe (inside).

Function of the frontal lobe?
Voluntary control of skeletal muscles and thought processing.
Function of the occipitae lobe?
Sight and visual.
Function of the temporal lobe?
Hearing and smell.
Function of the parietal lobe?
Pressure, pain, touch and temperature (feeling).
Function of the Insula lobe?
Self awareness, emotions and some motor control.
Why are humans smarter than elephants but elephants have a bigger brain (HINT grooves)?
The more grooves, the more surface area, the more neurons, the more connections, the smarter we are.
WHat is the corpus callossum?
A tissue that connects the two hemispheres of the brain.
Where is the grey and white matter?
Grey matter is on the outside and white on the inside.
