Nervous System Flashcards
Sensory afferent
nerves in the PNS that carry info INTO the brain or spinal cord
Motor efferent
nerves that carry info AWAY from the brain and spinal cord
Autonomic nervous system
Division of PNS, controls involuntary effector organs
Somatic nervous system
Division of PNS, controls voluntary effector organs
Astrocyte
CNS. blood brain barrier. Provide strength
Oligodendrocytes
CNS. Form the myelin sheath. Insulates axon and increases speed of nerve impulse
Microglia
CNS. remove cellular debris, microbes, and damaged nervous tissue
Ependymal cells
CNS. Line ventricles of the brain and central canal of spinal cord. Line open spaces. Make and circulate CSF.
Schwann cells
PNS. Form myelin sheath around axons.
Satellite cells
PNS. surround cell bodies of neurons of PNS ganglia
Ganglia
cluster of cell bodies in CNS
Dura mater
outermost single layer around the spinal cord
Arachnoid mater
Lies deep to the dura mater, middle layer
Pia mater
innermost layer
denticulate ligament
ligament that is on the sides of the spinal cord that hold it in place
