Nervous System Flashcards
olfactory
detects sense of smell
optic
transmits vision
oculomotor
Opens the eye and constricts the pupil. Supplies four of the six extrinsic eye muscles (medial rectus, superior rectus, inferior rectus, and the inferior oblique) and the levator palpebrae muscle.
trochlear “pulley”
Moves the eye laterally and down (inferiorly). Innervates the superior oblique extrinsic eye muscle that loops through a “pulley-shaped” ligament in the orbit
trigeminal
Motor fibers elevate the mandible while chewing. Sensory fibers to the Scalp and face. The largest of the cranial nerves (three branches).
abducens
Abducts the gaze while turning the eye laterally. Supplies motor function for the lateral rectus eye muscle (the sixth extrinsic eye muscle).
facial
Innervates muscles of facial expression (also tear and salivary glands and taste buds).
vestibulochlear
Equilibrium and sense of hearing.
glossopharyngeal
-Responsible for swallowing movements (innervate the tongue and pharynx).
vagus
contains visceral and sensory neurons whose chemoreceptors detect blood CO2 concentrations. The word means “wanderer” or “vagabond”. The only cranial nerve that extends into the thorax and abdomen. Branches of the vagus nerve innervate the heart, lungs, and most organs of the abdomen.
accessory
Innervates muscles of speech and muscles that move the head and shoulders (considered an accessory part of the vagus nerve).
hypoglossal
-Innervates the muscles of the tongue. The term means “under the tongue”.
