nervous system Flashcards
Regulation in the context of the nervous system
the life process by which cells communicate and organisms respond to changes in the internal and external environment
Which two systems control and regulate the body?
Nervous and endocrine systems
What does the central nervous system (CNS) consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
all other nerves that lie outside of the brain and spinal cord.
What are nerve cells responsible for?
Receiving impulses and sending responses throughout the body
What are the three parts of the brain?
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Medulla
What is the primary function of the cerebrum?
Center of thinking, memory, emotions, sensory impulse interpretation, and all voluntary activity.
What role does the cerebellum play in the nervous system?
Responsible for coordination of muscles and is the center of balance.
What part of the brain does alcohol affect?
Cerebellum- reduces the ability to coordinate muscle activity.
What is the function of the medulla?
Center of involuntary activities
What is the spinal cord?
Tubular mass of nerve cells that extends from the brain stem downward through the center of the spinal column.
What protects the spinal cord?
Surrounded by vertebrae and meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
What is the role of the spinal cord in the nervous system?
Relays impulses to and from the brain and is the center of reflex actions.
What types of neurons are found in the peripheral nervous system?
- Sensory neurons
- Motor neurons
What do sensory nerves do?
Send messages from sensory receptors (on the dendrites to CNS (for interpretation
What do motor nerves do?
Send messages from CNS to muscles or glands for the response to carried out
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for?
Stimulates involuntary muscles and glands.
What are the two sets of neurons in the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic – increase/action
- Parasympathetic – decrease/rest
What types of actions does the somatic nervous system control?
Voluntary behaviors that require thinking
Where do impulses for voluntary actions start?
In the brain (cerebrum)
