Nervous System Flashcards
What is the primary function of the nervous system?
Function: To control and coordinate body activities by sending and receiving signals.
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
What are the main components of the central nervous system?
Brain and Spinal Cord.
What is the role of the peripheral nervous system?
To connect the CNS to limbs and organs, and carry out sensory and motor functions.
What are neurons?
Neurons – Specialized cells that transmit nerve impulses throughout the body.
What are the three types of neurons?
Sensory Neurons, Motor Neurons, and Interneurons.
What part of the neuron receives signals?
Dendrites – Branch-like structures that receive signals from other neurons.
What part of the neuron transmits signals to other cells?
Axon – A long, thin projection that carries impulses away from the neuron’s cell body.
What is a synapse?
Synapse – The small gap where neurons communicate by releasing neurotransmitters.
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for?
Autonomic Nervous System – Controls involuntary functions like heartbeat, digestion, and breathing.
