Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 5 group of nerves along the spinal cord?
Cervical nerves
Thoracic nerves
Lumbar nerves
Sacral nerves
Coccygeal nerves
How many spinal vertibra are in the cervical region of the spine?
C1-8
How many nerve vertibra are in the thoracic region?

How many vertibra are in the coccygeal region?
Co (1)
What do the cervical vertibra do?
Supply movement and feeling to the arms, neck and upper trunk. Also controls breathing
What do the thoracic vertibra do?
Supply’s movement and feeling to the trunk and abdomen
What do the lumbar and sacral nerves do?
Supply movement and feeling to the legs, the bladder, bowel and sexual organs
At which point along the nerves does the spinal cord stop at the grouoed nerves become the caudal equina?
Near L1 and L2
What is a dermatome?
An area of skin that is supplied feeling by a single spinal nerve

S3-5
What are myotomes?
A group of muscles which are innervation by single spinal nerve roots
What are you testing in myotome testing?
Looking for muscle weakness of particular group of muscles. Could suggest herniation of discs
What is C5 myotomes?
Shoulder abduction and external rotation; elbow flexion
What is C6 myotomes?
Wrist extension
What is C7 myotomes?
Elbow extensor and wrist flexion
What is C8 myotomes?
Thumb extension and finger flexion
What is T1 myotomes?
Finger abduction
What is L1/2 myotomes?
Hip flexion
What is L3 myotomes?
Knee extension
What is L4/5 myotomes?
Ankle dorsiflexion
What is L5 myotomes?
Great toe extension
What is S1 myotomes?
Ankle plantar flexion
What is S4 myotomes?
Bladder and rectum motor supply
