Nervous System Flashcards
what does the CNS control
brain and spinal cord
what is the peripheral nervous system split into
autonomic nervous system and somatic nervous system
what controls involuntary actions
autonomic nervous system
what controls voluntary actions
the somatic nervous system
what is the autonomic nervous system split in to?
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
what does the sympathetic nervous system control
fight or flight response
what does the parasympathetic nervous system control
rest and digest response
what does the sympathetic nervous system release
Noradrenaline
what does the parasympathetic nervous system release
Acetylcholine
what does the hypothalamus do
controls body temperature and produces hormones that control the pituitary gland
what does the cerebrum do?
- divided into 2 halves
- involved in vision, hearing, speech, thinking and memory
what does the right hemisphere of the brain control?
- controls left side of the body
- attention, memory, reasoning, problem solving
what does the left side of the brain control?
- the right side
- speech, comprehension, writing
Describe a reflex arc
- Nerve impulse triggered by a stimulus reaches the sensory neurone
- Impulse diffuses across synapse to relay neurone
- Relay neurone gives message to the motor neurone which causes an effect
