Nervous System Flashcards
CNS, PNS, more depth
What is the CNS?
Central nervous system– highway for information
what is apart of the CNS?
Brain and Spinal cord
what is PNS?
Peripheral Nervous System– receives information through senses
Spinal cord controls what?
motor reflexes
Spinal cord receives what?
Afferent messages– sensory messages (up to brain)
Spinal cord relays what?
Efferent messages– motor messages (down to muscles)
What does the PNS send?
afferent messages – sensory
what does the PNS receive?
efferent messages – motor
what is the PNS broken down into?
Somatic and Autonomic NS
Somatic NS?
governs voluntary movement through skeletal muscles
(consciously controlled movements)
Autonomic NS?
“automatic” system – governs involuntary functions through internal muscles, organs, glands
What does the autonomic break down into?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic NS
what is sympathetic NS?
“Fight or flight” – acts when highly aroused
it: increases heart rate, muscle tone, adrenaline, dilates pupils
“S” tressed
what is parasympathetic NS?
“rest and digest” – calms the body
it: slows heart rate, slows breathing, reduces adrenaline, reduces neural activity
“P” eace
