Nervous System Flashcards
Afferent
carry impulses from sensory receptor to central nervous system
Alzheimer Disease
degenerative disease of the brain-loss of memory and cognitive functions
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
unknown causes/breaks down the nerves in the nervous system that are responsible for movement/ AKA motor neuron disease and Lou Gehrigs Disease
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Controlling involuntary bodily functions such as sweating, secretion of glands, blood pressure.
Bell’s Palsy
weakness or paralysis of muscles that control expression on one side of the face
Central Nervous System (CNS)
comprised of brain and the spinal cord
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
considered to be the blood of the nervous system/ protects and cushions brain and spinal cord
Concussion
injury caused by sharp blow to the head, may result in loss of consciousness
Tract
A group of nerve fibers within the CNS
Quadriplegia
Paralysis from the neck down
Hemiplegia
paralysis effects one side of body
paraplegia
paralysis from waist down
Sheaths
made up of accessory cells
Meninges
membranes that encompass the brain and spinal cord
meninigitis
infection of the meninges that surround and protect the brain
Contusion
Brusing of the brain
Corpus Callosum
largest nerve tract that connects the right and left hemisphere of the brain
Efferent nerve
transmit impulse to stimulate muscle or organ
Epilepsy
A disorder associated with misfiring or interference of electrical impulses within brain. Can cause seizures
Fissure
Deep groove in brain
Interneurons
Nerve cells located entirely within the CNS.
work to help sensory and motor neurons
Motor Neurons
control most body functions, cause muscles to contract, glands to secret
Multiples sclerosis (MS)
chronic autoimmune disease effects brain and spinal cord
Neurons
Nerve Cells
Neuralgia
general nerve pain
Neurilemma
outer sheath of nerve composed of schwann cells
Parkinsons Disease
degeneration of nerve cells that cause movement. presents as a tremor of limb when body is at rest
Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
peripheral nerves/cranial nerves
that connect CNS to other body parts
sciatica
refers to pain that runs along aciatic nerve
Seizure
intense bursts of electrical activity are produced within brain
Sensory Neuron
Transmit sensory information through a peripheral process
Spina bifida
failure of spine to close properly during first month of pregnancy
stroke
causes brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen/ cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
sulcus
shallow groove of brain
