Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the function of the nervous system
A
- collects, processes and responds to infomation in the environment
- coordinates the working of different organs and cells in the body
2
Q
Parietal lobe
A
- intergrating infomation from senses
- processes spatial orientation, visual perception and pain and touch sensations
3
Q
Occipital lobe
A
- visual processing center of the brain
- “visual cortex”
- dreams originate
4
Q
Cerebrum
A
- motion related activities
- contributes to co-ordination, precession, accurate timing
- regulates fear and pleasure responses and some cognitive functions such as attention and language
5
Q
Brain stem
A
Severes as brains warning system and sets alertness level
6
Q
Temporal lobe
A
- chief auditory receptive area
- contains hippocampus
- ^ chief region where long-term memory is formed, and deals with high level visual processing
7
Q
Frontal lobe
A
- deals with mainly cognition and memory
- the ability to concentrate, make judgments, consequence analysis and problem solve
8
Q
Cerebellum
A
- sits beneath the cerebrum
- controlling motor skills and balance
- co-ordinating muscles to allow precise movements
- abnormalities in this area can lead to speech, motor problems and epilepsy
9
Q
What two structures does the diencephalon have
A
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
10
Q
Thalamus
A
- relay station for nerve impulses coming from the senses
- routes them to the appropriate part of the brain where they can be processed
11
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- regulates body temperature
12
Q
Somnatic nervous system
A
- transmits infomation from the receptor cell in sense organs to the CNS
- receives information from the CNS that directs muscles to act
- made up of 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves
- both have sensory and motor neurons
- S -> relay to CNS m -> from CNS
- involves in reflex actions without CNS = very quick
13
Q
Autonomic nervous system
A
- transmits infomation to and from internal bodily organis
- operates involuntarily
- two main divisions; sympathetic and parasympathetic
14
Q
Peripheral nervous system
A
- contains all the nerves outside the CNS
- main function is to relay never impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body, and vice-versa
15
Q
Sympathetic nervous system
A
- primarily involved in responses that help us deal with emergencies (fight or flight)
