Nervous System Flashcards
What makes up the CNS
Brain and Spinal cord
What makes up the PNS
cranial nerves, spinal nerves, plexuses, and peripheral nerves
What is a plexus
a large network of cells in the PNS
Sensory (afferent) Nerves
Carry messages TOWARDS the brain and spinal cord
Motor (efferent) Nerves
Travel FROM the spinal cord and brain to the muscles of the body
Autonomic Nervous System
carries impulses away from the CNS to the glands, heart, blood vessels, and involuntary muscles.
Sympathetic nervous System
Stimulates the body in times of stress
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Counter acts the sympathetic nervous system and calms the body down
Optic Nerve
Vision
Olfactory Nerve
Smell
Oculomotor
Moves the eyeball
Trochlear
Eye muscles / eyelids
Abducens
One specific eye movement
Facial Nerves
Face and scalp movement ; taste ; Ear sensation
Glossopharyngeal
Tongue sensations ; throat movement
Hypoglossal
Speech ; Swallowing
Accessory Nerves
Swallowing ; Head and shoulder movement
Vagus
Blood pressure ; heart rate ; coughing ; sneezing
Vestibuloccochlear
Hearing and Balance
Trigeminal
Forehead and scalp sensation ; Cheek sensation ; chewing
Neuron
An individual nerve cell
What does the myelin sheath do
Insulates the axon
What do the dendrites do
Receives impulses
