Nervous system Flashcards
what 2 parts is the nervous system made up of?
CNS
PNS
what organs are within in the CNS
Brain and spinal cord
where is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Outside of the brain/spinal cord
difference between somatic vs visceral
somatic = info from skin, muscles,bones to CNS
visceral= info from internal organs to CNS
is somatic voluntary or involontary?
voluntary
define autonomic
- involuntary movements
- regulating internal organs that we have no control over
what is autonomic nervous system further divided into?
- sympathetic:
- stimulates energy
-flight or fight - parasympathetic
- conserves energy
-rest and digest
difference between sensory and motor?
sensory = body to the brain
motor= brain to body
SA= sensory=afferent=Arrival to CNS= body to brain
ME= motor=efferent=Exit CNS= brain to body
what is the nervous tissue made up of?
- neurons
-neuroglia (aka glial cells)
what are the 3 components of a neuron and explain them
- dendrites= afferent, gives info to cell body
- cell body= integration for signals( processes and combines them)
- axon= efferent
where are neurotransmitters strored?
vesicles
label a neuron
draw a diagram that shows the event of neurotransmitters crossing the synaptic cleft
…
outline the event at a synapse during the arrival of AP
- AP arrives to the pre-synaptic axon which triggers the voltage channels gates of ca to open allowing them in
- high concentration of ca inside makes vesicle to fuse with plasma membrane
3.neurotransmitters release into synaptic cleft via exocytosis
4.they bind to receptors at the post-synaptic membrane - signal starts
3 factors that speed up AP
- large axon diameter=Large axons have less resistance, so nerve impulses travel faster
- myelin sheath= insulation speeds up nerve conduction through rapid jumping at gaps called nodes of Ranvier (saltatory conduction)
- stimulated with higher intensity=faster transmission of signal
