Nervous system Flashcards
Functions of Nervous System
sensory - nerves get information from inside the body and from the outside environment and carry the information to the CNS.
Integrative- The CNS interprets the information and decides what will happen.
-the CNS forms the plan.
Motor- motor nerves carry information from the CNS to muscles and glands
- motor nerves carry out the plans made by the CNS
Structure of nervous system NS
Central Nervous System-
1: Brain 2: Spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)- nerves that connect the CNS with the rest of the body.
-divides into
1. somatic nervous system -controls skeletal muscle, voluntary control
2. Autonomic nervous system
-controls smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands
-divides into parasympathetic NS and sympathetic NS
cells that make up the nervous system
neuroglia or glial
what is sympathetic system and parasympathetic system?
The sympathetic system is.
- fight or flight
-activated in stressful situations or danger
The parasympathetic system is.
- feed and breed or ‘rest and digest
-active during non-stressful conditions
Nerve impulse
is an electrical signal that carries information along a neuron.
also called “action potential”
two phases - depolarization and repolarization
Axon terminal
the nerve impulse travels down an axon and to the axon terminal.
the impulse causes the release of a neurotransmitter.
Matter
- the tissue of the CNs is:
-white matter —-myelinated axons
-grey matter—–unmyelinated axons
——cell bodies
——interneurons
——synapses
Myelin sheath
types of neuroglia.
covers parts of the axon on neurons to protect, insulate..
