Nervous System Flashcards
Functions of the Nervous System
Sensory input (afferent)
interpretation/integration of sensory input
motor output (effector organs)
Nervous System Divisions
CNS
PNS
Central Nervous System
integration and interpretation of sensory input and processing of motor output
> brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System
transport sensory input TOWARD CNS (Afferent division)
& motor output AWAY from CNS (efferent division)
*includes cranial and spinal nerves
Further divisions of sensory and motor
visceral : organs within body cavities
and somatic : all other structures, muscles/skin esp
Somatic sensory (SS)
general: touch, pain, pressure, vibration, temperature
special: hearing, equilibrium and vision
visceral sensory
general: stretch, pain, temp, chemical changes, nausea and hunger
special: taste and smell
Somatic Motor (SM)
Motor innervation to skeletal muscles
Visceral Motor
motor innervation to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands
neurons
able to respond to stim; carry electrical impulse
excitable cells
neuroglia
help neurons function more efficiently
NON-excitable
Structure of motor neurons and interneurons
Multipolar
multipolar shape
many dendrites, single axon
Special sensory neuron structure (ex: retina, olfactory mucosa)
bipolar
bipolar neuron structure
single dendrite, one axon attached to cell body
typical sensory neuron structre
unipolar
