Nervous System Flashcards
Cell body
Where the Nucleus and Cytoplasm is found in the CNS
Axon
A very long extension from the cell body
Dendrites
Forms junctions with other neurones
Myelin Sheath
Surrounds the axon and is made up of fatty material. Further provides insulation to axon.
Cytoplasm
Where chemical reactions take place.
Nucleus
Contains the DNA
Cell membrane
Controls what moves inside and outside the cell
Nerve ending
Fine branches of the axon that connect to a muscle (an effector) in the effector organ
Nerve ending
Fine branches of the axon that connect to a muscle in the effector organ
What are the 3 types of neurones?
Sensory, Relay and Motor
Receptor
The body part which detects a stimulus. They convert the stimulus into electrical impulses.
Reflexes
Natural reaction which doesn’t involve your brain or any thinking. It helps protect your body.
Synapse
The gap between between the 2 neurons.
Sensory Neurones
Carries from the receptor to the relay neurones in the CNS
Relay Neurones
Carries impulses from the sensory neurone to the motor neurone in the CNS e.g. spinal cord or brain.
