Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
A specialised network of cells in the human body. Our primary internal communication system
What is the central nervous system made up of?
The brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system (PNS) do?
Transmits messages via millions of neurone to and from the central nervous system
What is the spinal cord responsible for?
Reflex actions
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Governs vital functions that happen naturally e.g. breathing, heart rate, digestion, arousal and stress responses
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Controls muscle movement
Received info from sensory receptors
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
In control when in a state of arousal from shock, danger, stress or sexual arousal e.g. increased heart rate
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Responsible for relaxation or feeding- the ‘rest or digest’ state. Slow heart rate, stimulate activity of stomach
