Nervous System Flashcards
What can the nervous system be referred to?
It can be known as the “control center of the body”.
As a whole, what does the nervous system accomplish?
It integrates a huge communication network of billions of nerve cells called neurons that are designed to receive and send out information.
What are the three functions of the nervous system?
- Sensory
- Integrative
- Motor Function
What does the sensory function of the nervous system do?
It’s related to how we gather information about our inner and external surroundings.
What is the integrative function?
It’s the ability to process and interpret the information gathered.
What is motor function?
The ability to respond to the stimuli created by the information that has been processed.
What is the nervous system composed of?
Neurons
What do these neurons enable?
Fast communication between cells.
What are the three types of Neurons?
- Interneurons
- Motor neurons
- Sensory neurons
What do interneurons accomplish?
They send signals from one neuron to another.
What do motor neurons accomplish?
They transmit signals from the brain or spinal cord to other areas of the body.
What do sensory neurons accomplish?
Sensory neurons send signals to the brain or spinal cord.
Why is it vital that the nervous system be properly trained when starting an exercise program?
To ensure the right movement patterns are learned.
Every movement in the body is linked to what?
The nervous system.
What is the importance of having a good “mind muscle connection?”
It will improve performance and lower risk of injury.
