Nervous System Flashcards
Compare and contrast the two communication systems in the human body; nervous system and hormonal system?
In the body, the nervous system co-ordinates responses to stimuli. The nervous system links receptors (such as the eyes, ears, nose or sensory receptors in the skin) to effectors which respond to messages from the nervous system ( such as muscles and glands)
Another type of communication system is controlled by hormones. Hormones are chemicals provided by special glands that release them into the blood. Unlike the nervous system, however, hormones will only affect certain target organs. Hormones usually act more slowly than the nervous system and over a longer period of time
Define stimulus?
Anything we are able to respond to
Describe the role of a receptor?
Detects the change in stimulus
Describe the role of a co-ordinator?
Links receptors and effectors
Describe the role of a effector?
An action is carried out in response to stimulus
