nervous, endocrine system and synaptic transmission Flashcards
what are the two functions of the nervous system
- collect. process and respond to information
- co-ordinate with working organs and cells
what are the two parts of nervous system
brain and spinal cord
what are the two parts of the Peripheral nervous system ?
somatic nervous system (sensory and motor information)
Automic nervous system (Governs vital organs)
what is the endocrine system
in charge of creating and releasing hormones
what is fight or flight ?
how animals respond, body becomes physiologically aroused in readiness to fight or in cases flee.
what are neurons
building block for nervous system, process and transmits messages
what are the three different types of neurons
Sensory neurons - carry messages from PNS to CNS (long dendrites and short axons)
Relay neurons - connects sensory neurons to motor or other relay neurons. (short dendrites and short axons)
Motor neurons - connect the
CNS to effectors such as muscles and glands. (short dendrites and long axons)
what is synaptic transmission
process at synapses by a chemical signals is released from one neuron.
what is chemical transmission
neurons communicate with others within groups known as neural networks.
Neurons are separated by synapses.
what are Neurotransmitters
brain chemicals released from synaptic vesicles which relay signals from one neuron to another.
what are Inhibitors
when neurotransmitters such as seritoin increase the negative charge of postsynaptic neurons.
