Nervous Control of the Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
what is the nervous system
the system whereby the brain and central nervous system send signals to muscles to tell them when to contract
(the heart is a muscle)
what are the four main sections of the electrical impulse pathway
electrical impulses are passed in this order
- SA node
- AV node
- bundle of his
- purkinje fibres
where is the SA Node
on top of the right atrium near the vena cava
where is the AV node
along the septum near atria
where is the bundle of his
along the septum
where are the purkinje fibres
branch out around the outside of the muscular heart
what is SA node short for
sinoatrial node
what is the function of the SA node
‘the heart’s natural pacemaker’
triggers atrial systole (contraction)
what iss AV node short for
atrioventricular node
what is the AV node’s function
slows down the contraction of the ventricles (for a tenth of a second) to assure contraction occurs at the right time
what is the function of the bundle of his
conducts electrical impulse from the central part of the heart to the base of the ventricles
what is the function of the purkinje fibres
conducts electrical impulse back up the ventricle walls
what are the steps of the cardiac cycle
- atrial systole (both atria contract and blood is pushed into ventricles)
- iso-volumetric contraction (pressure increases, valves are pushed through)
- ventricular ejection (both ventricles contract, blood ejects into arteries)
- iso-volumetric relaxation (pressure decreases, valves close)
