Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
what does autonomic mean
A
self-regulating, involuntary
2
Q
what are the two elements of the autonomic nervous system
A
- sympathetic nervous system (excites and arouses the body)
- parasympathetic nervous system (calms the body down)
3
Q
what triggers SNS (sympathetic nervous system)
A
stress (e.g. pain, danger, exercise)
4
Q
what are the 5 things that happen when the SNS kicks into gear
A
- adrenaline is secreted e.g. pupils dilate, blood sugar released
- increase in heart rate (greater cardiac output)
- increase in blood pressure (speeds up blood flow)
- increases contractile force of cardiac muscle (heart contracts harder)
- stimulates vasoconstriction/vasodilation (determines/directs blood flow)
5
Q
what are 3 things that happen when the PNS (parasympathetic nervous system) kicks into gear
A
- decrease in heart rate
- decrease in blood pressure
- decrease in cardiac output (total volume of blood being pumped out)
