Nervous and Endocrine Systems Flashcards
What is the Nervous System?
Sends electrical impulses along neurons.
- The message is transmitted to target cells by neurotransmitters.
- The response to stimuliis near instantaneous.
What is the Endocrine System?
Regulates long-term processes such as growth, development, reproduction, metabolism.
- Uses hormones to relay information and instructions between cells.
- Regulated by negative feedback.
- Maintains homeostasis.
Three General Features of the Endocrine System?
Ductless (gland that secretes directly into the bloodstream)
Rich supply of blood
Hormones, produced by the endocrine glands are secreted into the bloodstream.

How is the Endocrine System controlled?
Controlled by negative feedback, Stimulus triggers the production of a hormone that acts to reduce the intensity of the stimulus.

Testosterone (Fact Card)
Crosses cell membrane.
Bind to receptors and activates or deactivates specific genes.
Targets cells causing metabolic activity
Alters rate of DNA transcription in nucleus, changing patterns of protein synthesis.
What is Stress and what are three ways the adapts to it?
Stress is any condition that threatens homeostasis
General Adaptation Syndrome to stress -
– Alarm phase (fight or flight)
– Resistance phase (glucocorticoid response)
– Exhaustion phase (organ system failure)
