Immune System Flashcards
1
Q
What are the body’s 6 defence mechanisms?
A
1.Lymph nodes
2.Respiratory system
3.Skin
4.White blood cells
5.Spleen
6.Stomach &
Intestines
2
Q
What defences are included in the first line of defence?
A
Skin • Mucous membranes • Secretions of skin and mucous membranes • Saliva • Respiratory cilia
3
Q
What defences are included in the 2nd line of defence?
A
Phagocytes i.e. white blood cells • Antimicrobial proteins • Inflammatory response • NK cells
4
Q
What defence in the Third line of defence.
A
Lymphocytes e.g. T
cells and B cells
• Antibodies
5
Q
What do T cells do?
A
Attack
6
Q
What do B cells do?
A
Produce antibodies
7
Q
How do carbohydrates affect the immune system?
A
Low CHO increases stress hormone production e.g.
cortisol which is immunosuppressive
• Added to effect of exercise stress
• Low CHO prevents reduces antibody production
and NK cell function
• CHO also fuels immune cells!!!
