nervous Flashcards
What does the Na/K pump do?
Pump out 3 Na+ ions for every 2 K+ ions it brings in
How does one neuron communicate with the other?
Calcium from the receiving cell allows the synaptic vesicles to fuse with the axon membrane, releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft.
Ligand-gated ion channels (neurotransmitter receptors) recieve the neurotransmitters
What happens at the peak of the action potential?
Na+ channels close and K+ channels open
What do drugs affecting serotonin do?
Reduce negativity ≠ increase positivity; common ones include SSRIs, such as Prozac
What is upregulation and downregulation?
Up: increasing receptors
Down: taking away receptors
What neurotransmitter is affecting ADHD and ADD?
Dopamine
What does the cell membrane do?
Produce ion channels and pumps NOT barrier
What is the polarity of each of the types of neurons?
Motor is multi
Sensor is uni
Inter is bi
What is the step by step of stepping on a bug?
Retina to midbrain to occipital by way of optic nerve (interneuron)
Occipital lobe to amygdala
Amygdala to frontal lobe “kill it!”
Frontal lobe to motor cortex
Motor cortex to cerbellum
Cerebellum to spinal cord by way of brain stem (interneuron)
Spinal cord to motor neuron to muscle
Ear sensory to temporal lobe to amygdala
Nerve
group of neurons
Afferent nerve
From PNS to CNS (see an APPle)
Efferent nerve
From CNS to PNS (use EFFort)
plexus
nerve clusters
Frontal lobe
happiness, long-term memory, problem solving
Motor cortex
In frontal lobe, movement
