Nerves,synapses and neurotransmitters Flashcards
What are the 3 functions of the nervous system
- Sensory
- Integrative
- Motor
Sensory
knows what is happening
Integrative
makes decisions based on the sensory input, and then instructs the motor system to do something
motor
does something
2 Divisions of the nervous systems
- Central nervous systems
2. Peripheral nervous systems
Central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
all neural tissue outside the CNS
Afferent
brings sensory information to the CNS from the receptors situated in skin, muscle and visceral organs
Efferent
sends information to the muscles and glands
Somatic nervous system
controls skeletal muscle movement
responsible for voluntary and involuntary movements
Autonomic nervous system
sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
controls subconscious action
smooth and cardiac muscle function
glandular secretions
Neural tissue contains 2 types of cells
- neurons
2. neuroglia
Neuron cell
cells that send and receive signals
Neuroglia cell
cells that support and protect neurons
Myelin sheath
covers the axon
is a fatty substance
