Nerves of the Hand Flashcards
Distal to the carpal tunnel, what does the median nerve supply?
Two and a half thenar muscles and the 1st and 2nd lumbricals.
What else does the median nerve supply (on the lateral side)?
sends sensory fibers to the…
- skin on the lateral palmar surface
- the sides of the first three digits
- the lateral half of the 4th digit, and
- the dorsum of the distal halves of these digits.
What does the Palmar Cutaneous Branch of the Median Nerve supply?
the central palm
Where does the Palmar Cutaneous Branch of the Median Nerve arise?
arises proximal to the flexor retinaculum and passes superficial to it (it does not pass through the carpal tunnel).
How does the ulnar nerve leave the forearm?
By emerging from deep to the tendon of the FCU and continues distally to the wrist via the ulnar (Guyon) canal.
At the Guyon Canal, what happens to the ulnar nerve?
Is bound by fascia to the anterior surface of the flexor retinaculum.
What happens to the ulnar nerve just proximal to the wrist?
it gives off a palmar cutaneous branch and an ulnar cutaneous branch.
Where does the palmar cutaneous branch pass after branching from the ulnar nerve?
passes superficial to the flexor retinaculum and palmar aponesuperficial to the flexor retinaculum and palmar aponeurosis.
What does the dorsal cutaneous branch supply?
the medial half of the dorsum of the hand, the 5th finger, and the medial half of the 4th finger.
What does the deep branch of the ulnar nerve supply?
the hypothenar muscles, the medial two lumbricals, the AD, the deep head of FPB, and all the interossei.
What is another name for the ulnar nerve?
Nerve of Fine Movements.
Why is the ulnar nerve also referred to as the Nerve of Fine Movements.
because it innervates muscles that are concerned with intricate hand movements.
Which nerve supplies no hand muscles?
Radial Nerve.
