Fascia of Palm Flashcards
The palmar aspect of the hand features a central concavity that separates into two eminences. What are they?
- Thenar
2. Hypothenar
Thenar Eminence
lateral, more prominent, at the base of the thumb.
Hypothenar Eminence
medial, smaller, proximal to the base of the 5th finger.
The fascia of the palm is continuous with what?
The antebrachial fascia and the fascia of the dorsum of the hand.
Where on the hand is the fascia thin?
Over the thenar and hypothenar eminences.
Where on the hand is the fascia thick?
Centrally, where it forms the fibrous palmar aponeurosis and in the fingers where it forms the digital sheaths.
Describe the palmar aponeurosis
a strong, well defined part of the deep fascia of the palm.
What does the palmar aponeurosis form?
four longitudinal digital bands
What does the palmar aponeurosis cover and overly?
the soft tissues and overlies the long flexor tendons.
Where does the palmar aponeurosis begin?
radiates from the apex of the hand
Where does the palmar aponeurosis end?
attach distally to the bases of the proximal phalanges
What does the palmar aponeurosis turn into at the bases of the phalanges?
where they become continuous with the fibrous digital sheath.
What are the fibrous digital sheaths?
ligamentous tubes that enclose the flexor tendons and the synovial sheaths that surround them as they pass along the palmar aspect of their respective digit.
Where does the medial fibrous septum extend?
extends deeply from the medial border of the palmar aponeurosis to the 5th metacarpal.
What is medial to the medial fibrous septum?
The medial or hypothenar compartment
