Nerves Exam 1 Flashcards
Suprascapular nerve
Innervates: Supraspinatus
Infraspinatus
Path: Descends from C5.
Passes through the scapular notch under the transverse scapular ligament into supraspinatus.
Passes around base of scapular spine and into infraspinatus
Thoracodorsal Nerve
Innervates: Latissimus Dorsi
Path: Branches from posterior cord of brachial plexus
Dorsal scapular nerve
Innervates: Rhomboids (minor and major) and Levator Scapulae
Path: Descends from C5 and passes deep to the muscles
Axillary Nerve
Innervates: Deltoid and Teres Minor
Path: Passes through quadrangular space between:
Teres major and minor
Long head of the triceps and humerus
Accessory Nerve
Innervates: Trapezius and Sternocleidomastoid
Path: Cranial nerve CN XI, descends from the base of skull, out of posterior triangle of neck, down the side of the neck and deep to trapezius
Upper subscapular nerve
Innervates: Subscapularis
Path: Stem from posterior cord of brachial plexus
Lower subscapular nerve
Innervates: Subscapularis and Teres major
Path: Stem from posterior cord of brachial plexus
Long thoracic nerve
Innervates: Serratus anterior on superficial surface of the muscle
Path: Descends from C5, C6 and C7
Musculocutaneous nerve
Innervates: Biceps, brachialis, and coracobrachialis
Path: Lateral cord of brachial plexus
Median Nerve
Innervates: Pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, half of flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus, pronator quadratus, flexor digitorum superficialis
Path: Deep to Bicipital aponeurosis, through pronator teres, runs down center of forearm deep to flexor digitorum superficialis
Ulnar Nerve
Innervates: Flexor carpi ulnaris, half of flexor digitorum profundus
Path: Posterior to medial epicondyle, through flexor carpi ulnaris, down ulnar side of forearm deep to flexor carpi ulnaris
Radial Nerve
Innervates: Triceps, supinator, bracioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor digitorum, extensor digit minimi, extensor carpi ulnaris, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, extensor indicis.
Path: Branches from posterior cord, passes between lateral and medial heads of triceps along radial groove; anterior to lateral epicondyle of humerus, deep to brachioradialis, deep radial nerve to posterior compartment (mostly motor); superficial radial nerve to dorsal skin (mostly sensory), superficial to snuffbox tendons
