Nerves and Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
What are receptors?
A
Specialised cells that can detect changes in the environment called stimuli.
2
Q
Where are the receptors found?
A
- Eyes
- Ears
- Tongue
- Nose
- Skin
3
Q
What is each receptor sensitive to?
A
- Eyes - Light
- Ears- Sound and position of head
- Tongue- Chemicals in food
- Nose- Chemicals in the air
- Skin- Touch, pressure, pain and temperature

Q
What are the stages involved in a reflex action?
A
- A stimulus is detected by receptors and impulses are sent along a sensory neurone to the CNS.
- The impulses reach a synapse between the sensory neurone and the relay neurone and trigger chemicals to be released.
- The chemicals cause impulses to be sent along the relay neurone.
- Impulses reach a synapse between the relay neurone and the motor neurone and chemicals are released causing an impulse to be sent down the motor neurone
- The impulses travel along the motor neurone to the effector (most of the time it is a muscle).
