Nerves Flashcards
Unit 4
what is the main function of the nervous system?
coordinates various bodily functions by responding to both external and internal stimuli
What are the structural components of the nervous system?
Diverse neurons (nerve cells)
How do neurons communicate with each other?
via synapses that release neurotransmitters
What type of cell can be found around synaptic terminals of neurons?
glial cells
What do glial cells do?
Support and regulate overall function of the nervous system.
What is included in the CNS?
Brain, spinal cord, vertebral/spinal canal
How many layers of fibrous coverings are the meninges?
Three
What produces the cerebral spinal fluid?
Choroid plexus
Where is the choroid plexus located?
In the ventricles of the brain
Where does the CSF circulate?
between the ventricles, central canal of the spinal cord and the space between the meninges.
How are neurons arranged in the brain stem?
In clusters called nucleus (motor nucleus)
What are the clusters of cranial nerves in the brain stem organized as and give rise to?
cranial nerves and give rise to axon of motor function
Where do the axons of the motor nucleus exit the skull and what do they exit as ?
through various foramina and as cranial nerves
What four nerves pass through the orbital fissure?
Oculomotor (III), Trochlear (IV), Ophthalmic(V)-1st division, Abducens (VI)
