Nerves Flashcards
Olfactory function
Sensory, carry afferent impulses for sense of smell
Olfactory origin
Arise from olfactory sensory neurons located in olfactory epithelium of nasal cavity
Optic origin
Arise from retina of eye to form the optic nerve
Optic function
Purely sensory function, carry afferent impulses for sense of smell
Oculomotor origin
Extend from ventral midbrain and pass through bony orbit
Oculomotor function
Raising eyelid, directing eyeball, constricting pupil, and controlling lens shape for focusing
Trochlear origin
Emerge from dorsal midbrain
Trochlear function
Supply somatic motor fibers to one of the extrinsic eye muscles
Abducens function
Supply somatic motor fibers to lateral reclusive muscle, an extrinsic muscle of the eye
Vagus origin
Extends into the thorax and abdomen
Vagus function
Regulate heart rate, breathing and digestive system activity. Sensory fibers carry impulses from thoracic and abdominal viscera
