Nerve supply of the Pelvic Limb lecture Flashcards
Where is there a significant difference in horse hindlimb vs dog?
distal limb
What branches of the spinal nerve contribute to the lumbosacral plexus?
ventral primary branches
What kind of nerves leave the lumbosacral plexus?
named peripheral nerves
What is the spinal nerve origin of the Femoral nerve?
L4-L6
What is the spinal nerve origin of the Obturator nerve?
L4-L6
What is the spinal nerve origin of the Sciatic nerve?
L6-S2
What is the spinal nerve origin of the Pudendal nerve?
S2-S4
What named peripheral nerves have an origin at L4-L6?
Femoral and Obturator
What named peripheral nerve has an origin at L6-S2?
Sciatic
What named peripheral nerve has an origin at S2-S4?
pudendal
What is the most important muscle of the pelvic limb?
Quadriceps femoris
What is the nerve that innervates Quadriceps femoris?
the femoral n.
What would happen if there was no innervation from the femoral nerve?
quadriceps would not get stimulated and the animal would be unable to stand
What artery does the femoral nerve run with?
Lateral circumflex femoral a.
What type of actions/muscle groups to the limb does the femoral nerve do?
Innervates flexors of the hip and extensors of the stifle
What is the branch off the femoral nerve that innervates the medial skin and joints?
saphenous n.
Who does the obturator nerve supply?
Adductors of the hip
Does the obtorator n. supply the skin?
no skin innervation
What is an example of obturator n. damage?
Calving paralysis. Go down in a split because they can’t adduct the limb
What does the cranial gluteal nerve supply?
abductors of the hip and the tensor fasciae latae m.
Does the cranial gluteal n. supply skin?
no
What does the caudal gluteal n.supply?
extensors of the hip and abductors of the hip
Does the caudal gluteal innervate the skin and joints?
no
What is the biggest nerve of the hindlimb?
sciatic
What are the 2 branches of the sciatic n.?
tibial and common peroneal n.
What is the function of the sciatic n?
flex stifle
flex/ext hock and digits
Does the sciatic innervate skin? Where?
yes
almost all the skin from stifle to hock (minus medial strip supplied by the saphenous branch from femoral)
What would happen if there was damage to the sciatic nerve?
poor limb flexion
knuckled over at digit
What is the caudal division of the sciatic nerve that passes between the heads of the gastrocnemius?
tibial n.
What is the branch off the sciatic that innervates cutaneous tissue?
caudal cutaneous sural n.
The tibial nerve divides just proxiaml to the tarsus into what 2 branches?
medial and lateral plantar nerves
What is the function of the tibial n?
flex stifle
extend tarsus
flex digit
What would damage to the tibial n. present like?
dropped hock, can’t extend hock or flex digit
What major nerve gives rise to the common peroneal?
sciatic
What are the divisions off the common peroneal n?
sup and deep peroneal
What does the common peroneal nerve do?
flex tarsus
extend digit
What would damage to the common peroneal nerve do?
Can’t flex tarsus and extend digit
knuckling/can’t flip foot over
If a horse is in lateral recumbancy for an extended period of time, what nerve would be responsible for the pressure asphyxia to the hind limb of affected side?
superficial peroneal nerve off of the common peroneal n.
What nerve innervates the tarsal joint?
deep peroneal n
What nerve innervates the fetlock joint?
med/lat dorsal metatarsal nerves
med/lat plantar nerves
What nerves innervate the pastern and coffin joints?
plantar=med/lat plantar digital nerves (from tibia)
dorsal=med/lat dorsal digital nerves (from peroneal)
What happened to a horse with Stringhalt?
ingestion of a specific toxic plant
How do you help a horse with Stringhalt?
Sx resection of the lat digital ext tendon OR cut peroneal n.
