Nerve supply for upper and lower limb Flashcards
What is the brachial plexus
The brachial plexus is a network of nerve fibres that send signals from the spinal cord to the skin and musculature of the upper limb (Shoulder, Arm, Hand)
Describe the path of the brachial plexus
It begins in the root of the neck, passes laterally and inferiorly over rib 1, passes through the axilla, and runs through the entire upper extremity.
Where does the brachial plexus begin
It begins in the root of the neck
Where does the brachial plexus pass through, from its origin
It passes over rib 1 through the axilla and runs through the entire upper extremity.
Which structures form the brachial plexus
The plexus is formed by the **anterior rami (divisions) ** of cervical spinal nerves C5, C6, C7 and C8, and the first thoracic spinal nerve, T1. [C5-T1]
How many parts is the brachial plexus divided into
5
List the parts of the brachial plexus (5)
- Roots
- Trunks
- Divisions
- Cords
- Branches
What is the mnemonic for the parts of the brachial plexus
Read That Damn Cadaver Book
Really Thirsty Drink Cold Beer
Function of motor neuron
Supply all muscles related to movement of the upper limb
Function of sensory neuron
Cutaneous (skin) innervation
How do the roots of the brachial plexus exit the spinal cord
At each vertebral level, paired spinal nerves arise. They leave the spinal cord via the intervertebral foramina of the vertebral column.
What happens to the spinal nerves after they exit the spinal cord
Each spinal nerve then divides into an anterior and a posterior ramus
