Nerve Injury And Repair Flashcards
What are the kinds of injury?
Neuropraxia
Axonotmesis
Neurotmesis
Features of Neuropraxia
Endoneurium in tact
Axon intact
Mild compression\ demyelination
Mild conduction block
Mild muscle weakness
Mild sensory loss
Recovery is complete and spontaneous
Examples:
Crutch palsy
Saturday night palsy (falling asleep)
Features of Axonotmesis
Endoneurium intact
Axon is damaged (not intact)
Mild demyelination (wallerian degeneration)
Medium motor and sensory loss
Moderate conduction block
Repair without surgery
Good recovery (usually complete function and usually spontaneous)
Example
Fracture (closed)
Severe dislocated
Features of Neurotmesis
Endoneurium not intact
Axon not intact
Significant demyelination
Severe injury can damage other layers (peri and Epi)
Recovery is poor, surgery
Severe conduction block
Examples
Open fractures
Cut the nerve
Gun shot wound
