Nerve Cells, Muscle Cells and Sperm Cells Flashcards
What are nerve cells?
Cells which are specialised to carry electric impluses around the body of an animal
What do nerve cells have many of?
Dendrites to make connections to other nerve cells
What is an axon?
A structure that carries the nerve impulse from one place to another
How are synapses adapted?
They are adapted to pass the impulses to another cell or between a nerve cell and a muscle in the body using special transmitter chemicals. They contain lots of mitochondria to provide the energy needed to make the transmitter chemicals
What are muscle cells?
Muscle cells are specialised cells that can contract and relax
What do muscle cells contain?
Special proteins that slide over each other making the fibres contract
What organelles do muscle cells need lots of?
Mitochondria to transfer the energy needed for the chemical reactions that take place as cells contract and relax
What do muscle cells store?
Glycogen, a chemical that can be broken down and used in cellular respiration by the mitochondria to transfer the energy needed to for the fibres to contract
What are sperm cells?
They are cells which contain genetic info from the make parent
How are sperm cells adapted?
They have a long tail which helps the sperm move through the female reproductive system
What does the middle section of a sperm cell contain?
Mitochondria which transfers energy for the tail to work
What does the acrosome store?
Digestive enzymes for breaking down the outer layers of the egg
What large organelle does a sperm cell have?
A large nucleus which contains the genetic info to be passed on
