Nerve cells Flashcards
Dendrites…
Receive messages from other nerve cells, which are then sent onto the cell body.
The axon/nerve fibre…
sends nerve impulses only in one direction- away from the cell body.
The nucleus…
Controls the cell body.
The myelin sheath…
Electrically insulates the neurons from each other and increases the speed of the nerve impulse.
Sensory neurons
Have specialised receptors which are sensitive to stimuli. They can carry messages to the brain.
Connector neurons
Transmit messages between neurons in the CNS
Motor neurons
carry messages from the CNS to effectors. Effectors are muscles or glands that translate messages into action.
Synapse
the space between neurons. Slows messages and allows it to be redirected.
Neurotransmitter
carries the messages from the axon of one neuron to the dendrite of another.
