Nerve Blocks Flashcards
Radial nerve block (technique and region covered)
Large volume (5ml) just proximal to anatomic snuffbox. Covers dorsal lateral half of the hand and dorsal aspect of the thumb.
Ulnar nerve block (technique and region covered)
Deposit under the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon just proximal to distal wrist crease. Covers entire 5th digit, half of 4th digit and medial aspect of the hand and wrist.
Deep Peroneal nerve block (technique and region covered)
Deposit anesthetic at the medial malleolus between the extensor hallucis longus and the tibialis anterior tendon. Covers web space of the first and second toes and a small area proximal to the first and second toes on the plantar aspect.
Posterior Tibial nerve block (technique and region covered)
Inject posterior to the posterior tibial artery, at posterior edge of the medial maleolus. Covers plantar aspect of the foot.
Superficial Peroneal nerve block (technique and region covered)
Between the lateral malleolus and tibialis anterior tendon. Covers dorsal lateral aspect of the foot.
Sural nerve block (technique and region covered)
Between lateral malleolus and tibialis anterior tendon. Lateral aspect of ankle.
Saphenous nerve block (technique and region covered)
Between tibialis anterior tendon and superior border medial malleolus. Covers medial ankle.
Supraorbital and Supratrochlear nerve blocks (technique and region covered)
Inject superior to eyebrow in line with pupil, then direct medially after initial deposit and form wheal to reach edge of eyebrow. Covers forehead from vertex of scalp to bridge of nose.
Infraorbital nerve block (technique and region covered)
Inside mouth at gingival reflexion above maxillary canine and direct needle superiorly. Covers lower lid, medial cheek and both ipsilateral side of nose and upper lip
Mental nerve block (technique and region covered)
From mouth inferior to canine at gingival reflection inferiorly to mental foramen. Covers labial mucosa, gingival and lower lip adjacent to incisors and canines
Auricular block (technique and region covered)
From inferior and superior aspect of ear, inject anterior and posterior to the ear and deposit anesthetic while withdrawing the needle. Entire ear.
Femoral nerve block (technique and region covered)
Insert 1cm lateral to femoral artery at level of inguinal crease. Direct cephalad towards femoral nerve, about 2cm deep. Insert until patient reports paresthesias, then retract slightly and inject 20ml. Anterior thigh and medial leg.
