What is a TiA and Stroke?
Stroke - lack of blood supply to the brain resulting in neurological symptoms lasting over 24 hours TIA - less than 24 hours
What is some symptoms of a tia?
hemiparesis, aphasia
Which artery is blocked in a total anterior circulation stroke (TACS)?
Symptoms?
ICA or proximal MCA
Contralateral hemiparesis/hemianopia
Dysphasia, dyspraxia
Which artery is blocked in a PACS? Symptoms?
MCA motor defecit
Which artery is blocked in a LACS? Symptoms?
Lacunar stroke basal ganglia artery Pure motor, pure sensory, or sensorimotor
Which artery is blocked in a POCS? Symptoms?
Posterior circulation stroke Brainstem, cerebellar or occipital involvement
What is lateral medullary syndrome and what is its symptoms?
Stroke of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. Causes vertigo with cerebellar signs
What causes locked in syndrome?
Upper brainstem infarction
in a hypertensive patient, where would an hemorrhagic stroke most likely occur
basal ganglia, pons, cerebellum, sub cortical white matter

lobar intracranial hemorrhage
what supplies the blood supply to the spinal cord?
anterior 2/3rds - anterior spinal artery posterior - paired posterior spinal artery
How does an anterior spinal infarct present?
painful. spinal shock syndrome.
What is the decorticate response?
isolation of cortex from lower brain. Lower limbs extend and upper limbs flexed. Like a mummy
What is a decerebrate response?
Damage to lower parts of brain, loss of descending inhibition. Complete extension of lower and upper limbs and head.
