Nephrons Flashcards
where are most of our nephrons houses?
Most nephrons live in the medulla cortex. but they can live both in the cortex and the medulla
How many nephrons do we have?
about 1 million per kidney
Glomerulus
-a network of capillaries where fluid leaks out of the circulatory system called “Ultra Filtrate”
What is the ultra filtrate made up of?
water, urea, salts, minerals, and nutrients
Are RBC and WBC apart of the ultra filtrate that gets leaked out of the glomerulus?
No. The RBC, WBC, and Platelets stay in the blood vessles
Where is the glomerulus housed?
in the renal cortex
Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT):
-first cite of water reabsorbtion
-first cite of nutrient reabsorbtion
-prevents dehydration and starvation
-housed in the cortex
Bowmans capsule
-a funnel like structure that surrounds the glomerulus and catches the ultra filtrate
-housed in the renal cortex
What nutrients does the PCT reabsorb?
Glucose and Amino Acids
Loop of Henle
-it’s goal is to concentrate urine as much as possible
-has two limbs
Descending limb of the loop of Henle:
-more permiable to H20
-water gets pulled out to get reabsorbed
Ascending limb of the loop of Henle:
-More permiable to Salt
-draws salt out
Distal convoluted tubule (DCT):
-WHERE MINERAL BALANCE OCCURS
-Selectively saves minerals
-helps regulate blood pressure
-where H+ and bicarbonate are excreted
Collecting duct
-Extends from cortex through the medulla into calyx and into delievers urine to the renal pelvis for excretion
