Intro Flashcards
What are the 2 main purposes of the urinary system?
- Rid the body of Nitrogen containing waste
2.Kidneys are the main organ for regulation of water and ion balance within the body
What do amino acids (AAs) make?
AAs make proteins and other Nitrogen containing moelcules
What has to be removed from the amino acid when it gets oxidized or converted to another molecule?
the amino group (NH2) gets removed. those nitrogen compounds are TOXIC and have to be removed from body
What are the three ways Nitrogen waste is excreted?
1.Ammonia (NH3)
2.Urea
3.Uric acid
Ammonia (NH3)
-formed directly after the amino group is removed
-very little energy required to create ammonia
-NH3 is VERY toxic
-high soluble in water
Urea
-less toxic than NH3
-produced in liver, requires more energy than ammonia does
-less toxic than NH3
-water soluble
Uric acid
-the end product of protein digestion
-not very toxic or very soluble in water
What can high levels of uric acid lead to?
deveopment of gout or kidney stones
