Neovascular Glaucoma Flashcards
What is the official term for neovascular glaucoma?
Rubeosis iridies
For what reason is neovasc glaucoma caused?
Due to severe sustained ischemia
what is the underlying cause is ischemia?
Lack of oxygen supply to retina which maybe because of a retinopathy or an occlusion
Why does the body allow for nevac to occur?
It’s the body’s attempt to reoxygenate ischemic retinal tissue
Taking a central retinal vein occulsion as an example, how long will it take for neovasc to occur?
3 months from the original occulsion
What is the problem of neovasc vessels?
They’re fragile and leak and they’re supported by a growth of fibrous membranes which are used as scaffolding for the new vessels
Wheee do new vessels from neovasc originate from?
The pupil margin and migrate across the iris towards the anterior chamber angle
How does neovasc cause an increase of iop?
The proliferation of new vessels and tissue on the iris reduce outflow of aqueous through the trab which causes an increase of iop and the px is at risk of secondary glaucoma
If the neovasc isn’t treated and progresses, what can occur?
Secondary closed angle glaucoma due to the contraction of the fibrous membrane which drags the iris anterior and occludes the angle and the trab which causes an acute increase of iop
Why is neovasc rate in high street practise?
Because they’re normally already under the care of an opthalmologist
What is the referral for neovasc glaucoma?
Emergency same day telephone
