Neoplasia Flashcards
What is this describing?
A state of autonomous cell division/proliferation in the absence of any continuing external stimulus.
Neoplasia
What is this describing?
Division originating from a single cell which has acquired sufficient genomic alterations enabling it to divide autonomously.
Clonal proliferation
What is this describing?
An abnormal mass of tissue showing uncoordinated growth and serving no useful purpose. Can be benign or malignant.
Neoplasm
What is the behaviour and macroscopic appearance of a benign neoplasia?
- Slow growing
- Well circumscribed
- Encapsulated by a layer of fibrous tissue
- Not locally invasive
- No metastatic potential
What is the appearance and macroscopic appearance of a malignant neoplasia?
- Fast growing
- Poorly circumscribed
- Non-encapsulated
- Invasive growth
- Metastatic potential
What are the microscopic appearances of a benign neoplasia?
- Tumour cells very closely resemble cell of origin (well differentiated).
- Cells are uniform throughout the tumour
- Few mitoses
- Tumour cells have a normal nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio
What are the microscopic appearances of of a malignant neoplasia?
- May or may not closely resemble cell of origin (variable differentiation)
- Cells and nuclei vary in shape and size (pleomorphic)
- May mitoses
- High nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio
