What are the metastatic complications at the lung?
Haemoptysis, pneumonia, pleural effusion
What are the metastatic complications at the liver?
Jaundice, hepatic failure
What are the metastatic complications at the brain?
Seizures, stroke
What are the metastatic complications at the bone marrow?
Anaemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
What are the metastatic complications at the bone?
Pain, fracture, spinal cord compression.
What are the systemic complications of cancer?
Fever, weight loss, anorexia, night sweats, and decreased immunity.
What causes decreased immunity in cancer?
Release of cytokines from tumour cells (IL-1, TNFa)
What is this describing?
A syndrome caused by substances produced by the tumour cells which act remotely from the tumour or its metastases.
Paraneoplastic syndrome
What are the paraneoplastic effects on the endocrine system?
Hypercalcaemia (PTH), Cushing’s (ACTH)
What are the paraneoplastic effects on the neuromuscular system?
Eaton-Lambert
What are the paraneoplastic effects on the haematological system?
VTE(release of tumour pro-coagulants)
What are the paraneoplastic effects on the renal system?
Nephrotic syndrome (immune complex deposition)
