Neonatal Resuscitation Flashcards
Age that would warrant neonatal Resuscitation
Less than 48hrs old
Priorities with a neonate who isn’t breathing
Provide warmth
Assess for Responsiveness
Ensure adequate Ventilation
Ensure adequate circulation
Correct hypoxia
How do you assess for responsiveness
Flick souls of feet
Check for responsiveness while drying
How do you assess ventilation?
Suction secretions
If Apneic or gasping provide PPV w/ BVM at room air 40-60 breaths per minute
How do you assess circulation?
What is the BPM we are looking for to make decisions?
If heart rate is between 60 -100
PPV w/ BVM at 40-60 Breaths per minute
If heart rate is less than 60 start CPR until heart rate is above 60
If baby is becoming hypoxic or not getting better from hypoxia what do you do?
Add supplemental O2 until heart rate comes up to >100
Special considerations when trying to decide if you should provide neonatal resuscitation
Don’t have to do it with newborns <21 weeks or <9 inches long
Sensitivity to parents needs can be considered
What is a good sign of adequate PPV?
A rising heart rate over (>100 is ideal)
