What are the structures that are unique to the fetal circulation?
A
- Ductus venosus (umbilical vein to pulmonary trunk, mostly bypassing liver)
- Foramen ovale (right atrium to left atrium to mostly bypass lungs)
- Ductus arteriosis (between pulmonary trunk and aorta)

What happens to these structures at birth (first breath)?
A
- Close over
- Umbilical cord constricts, increasing resistance and therefore pressure in umbilical a + v
- increased BP in systemic circulation
- PVR in lungs decreases
- BP in pul. circulation decreases
- flap in FO closes over
